Relieve The Postie - Get Your Bills Online Instead

Bills. We can’t stop them coming — and despite your best efforts, the postman refuses to stuff them back in his bag. But there is a way of paying them that at least helps reduce the postal services’ carbon footprint.

Many banks, utility and other commercial suppliers now offer an option of sending you your bills electronically, which usually involves simply logging onto their website. You can then also pay them online.

The Royal Mail encourages this via their ‘Bills Online’ website, which allows you to manage all your bills from one site. They even send you automatic reminders when your bills are due; now there’s something to look forward to… It’s all explained here

I just can’t get myself to do this yet. I have all my files on the shelf with bills neatly filed waiting for tax returns and all that boring end of year stuff. i want to say no to the paper but i can’t. virtual filing doesn’t seem right. even though i know it is what about you?

I have a similar filing urge. When we were in the US our bank and credit card company offered our statements as PDFs and emailed us each month when they were ready. Having a distinct file to put in a folder on my computer worked for me.

Here our bank just have a rather poorly designed web page to replace a statement and that’s not nearly so helpful, pushing me back towards paper statements. I guess I could make my own PDFs quite easily, but I haven’t yet made the effort. Maybe soon!

My problem with this is that if I need ID to apply for something (CRB, library card, pretty much anything these days) I’m going to need a recent bill or bank statement to prove my name and address. If I go paper-free with everything, I’ll be a bit stuck!!

I get most of my bills online, and file them on the computer.

I wonder why Royal Mail is encouraging this? After all, when they don’t have bills to deliver, they’ll only be left with junk mail!

We get some bills on line including our gas bill but this goes to my husbands email and he never looks at it, when the gas is cut off we will know they have been sending the equivalent of red bills to him for weeks!!!
Bank statements are irritating, we are with the socially responsible Co-op which sends a4 sheets out with hardly anything on and statements on line are only available for a year so useless for doing tax returns for those of us who are self employed- any suggestions??

Intelligent Finance and, I think, Halifax, will let you download your online docs to various formats incl pdf and microsoft money. Very handy! I don’t get any banking documents in the post now. Next step is to do the same for insurance renewal reminders hopefully.
