  1. Slow Down, Calm Down (Stick to the speed limit) -

Didn’t realise that slowing down also saved petrol!! Logical really, now I think about it! Save lives and the planet. Result! I find that slowing down and taking things more calmly, reduces my stress levels on a journey and makes me feel more laid back. Plus the fact that I can’t speed as I have an old camper van!

  2. Buy A Copy of Change the World for a Fiver -

This book is great. Has lots of resources in the back. Gave me a bit of a kick start. The dust cover doubles as a poster so you can stick it up to remind the whole family. A great way to encourage conversations on the subject of living generously, too. Have bought 3 copies already!!

  3. Put A Save-A-Flush Device In Your Cistern -

I also brought some back from Greenbelt and have put one in our cistern. I keep checking it, but I don’t know what I’m expecting it to be doing in there!! Gave the rest out to friends. Am currently trying to blag some more from somewhere. Any suggestions will be gratefully recieved :)

  4. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I was brought up by a very environmentally conscious mum and dad, who always took there own shopping bags to Sainsbury’s!! My dad even taught me how to pack them efficiently. Bless him!! I always try to remember to take a fabric bag in my handbag, or loads for big shopping. And take great pride in turning down plastic bags. I had an incident recently in Clark’s where the woman serving me said I had to have a bag as proof of purchase. It wasn’t until I got down the stairs that I realised that my receipt is for that, so my son and I took out the shoes, put them in our rucksack, dumped the carrier in the shop and left. We felt like right political activists!!! It was dead exciting!! Like Vivienne, I have also been making, with the help of my mum (she’ll shout at me if I don’t mention her!!), shopping bags out of recycled fabric, to sell at church. Great minds think alike, eh? I have also been making recycled jewellery to sell.

  5. Recycle Your Greetings Cards -

Every year I use previous years cards for gift tags, then chuck leftover bits into recycling bin. Cheap and cheerful!! I’m going to start reusing birthday cards, too. Although I do make my own personal ones, too :)

  6. Buy Presents That Make A Difference -

For the last couple of months my mum and I have been making recycled jewellery and shopping bags to sell in church. Promoting Living Generously, which I have spoken about in church, and all proceeds going towards training a midwife and buying a cow.

  7. Encourage Others To Go Generous -

I got some Hippos and gave them out to people at church and other friends too. Am in the process of starting up a living generously group at church. Have about 10 families signed up and now we just need to arrange a date for our first meeting. Have also talked to 3 groups about the whole community and concept. Have had a good response. Just need to remain enthusiastic even when others put the whole idea down. It can be frustrating and difficult. But small steps are getting somewhere.

  8. Encourage Others To Go Generous -

Have had first church generous meeting!! How exciting!! Everyone enthusiastic and have committed to some changes already. We want to get the children involved and want to work towards becoming an eco-friendly church. Well done to everyone for getting others interested. It’s not easy, but keep going :) That’s a really good comment about LG at work. I work in a hospital and it’s heart breaking to see all the gloves and packaging that gets chucked away. However, you could introduce recycling collection points for cans, foil, paper etc or encourage everyone to bring their own mug to work. They are little ideas, not very dynamic, but a start. Will give it more thought ;)

  9. Buy Presents That Make A Difference -

My mate Paul travels all over the place. For his birthday we bought him an Essential Hygeine kit for a third world family. Thought he may meet them on his travels one day. He was well excited with it!! Which was good, as I didn’t want him to think that we think HE needs an essential hygeine kit!!!

  10. Get Rid of Your Car - OK, ambitious, but... -

We have a camper van, which is hard on petrol, but we only use it for holidays and about once or twice a week around town. The kids walk/cycle/scooter to school, I cycle to work and my husband works from home. We shop online, have a veg box delivered and I cycle to get extras (most of the time)!! We try our best but don’t want to get rid of our holiday home on wheels. Well done those of you who’ve made the leap!!

  11. Switch To Good (Green Or Socially Resonsible) Energy -

have recently moved house and switched to npower juice, as I always thought they were green suppliers. Feel this is first step. Very confusing and want to do what’s best for planet, but also need to be careful with cost. Really want someone to tell me a green supplier for gas and eletricity which is kind to my pocket as well as the planet!! Can anyone help? Southern electric gas, plant trees to offset carbon emissions. Is this any good?
