  1. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

Have been using bags for life for a long time now. I also have a couple of Turtle Bags (www.turtlebag.com, I think,) It’s a funky ‘string bag’ like your grandma would have used. They take up virtually no space and I keep one in my briefcase and in my handbag. That way I hopefully might always have a ‘green bag’ with me. I am not sure though where all of those plastic bags in my house come from… the other occupants of the chocolate house need a gently reminder every now and again.

My Grandad died recently at the great age of 88 and we were surprised to be asked if we would give pemission for his corneas to be donated. (He was very old and everything else had given up!)Which of course we agreed to. We later got a letter to say 2 elderly ladies in Northern Ireland had benefitted from this donation. My Grandad would have been thrilled. Since then I have registered on line to donate whatever is needed on my death. What a great way to recycle.

  3. Dry clothes outdoors. -

Love putting washing out on the line to dry, it smells nicer, if you peg things out carefully it can reduce the need for irnoing too and the best thing of all;it’s free. I have two clothes airers which I use in wet and cold weather and try never to use the tumble dryer although it does get used occassionally for large items like duvet covers in the winter :(

  4. Ladies: Consider a mooncup! -

Without doubt the best £18.99 I have ever spent. I only wish I had discovered it earlier in my life…I have also discovered I now experience fewer cramps and actaully have a lighter flow too (something to do witht the dyes in tampons perhaps or just coincidence?). I really like the idea that I am not flusing tampons down the loo or adding them to a landfill site.

  5. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I have lots of fabric shopping bags and use them all of the time.I keep one in my handbag/briefcase ‘just in case’ but I notice I still have carrier bags at home which people give me ‘things’ in… this is a tricky one but at least I’m not taking bags from shops.

  6. Switch To Energy Saving Lightbulbs -

have changed tolow energylight bulbs in 2 rooms so still a few to go. I do have a supply in the house for when the ‘other ones’ finally expire. Was interested to learn we should only use them in places where the light is on for a long time… good advice.

  7. Compost Your Leftovers -

Have just ordered my very first compost bin through my local Council website which also gave me a huge 75% discount! I’d recommend looking at local council websites as I know they are all under pressure to reduce how much rubbish they put into land fills and this is one way we can all help. I am also looking forward to some good compost next year too.

  8. Switch it off at the Plug. (Don't Stand By.) -

My family are just about getting used to waiting for the Sky TV channel to ‘warm up’ when they turn the TV on at the wall.. its a good way for my impatient 7 year old to actually learn to wait… and be patient. He seesm to appreciate we are trying to save resources…(hopefully). It feels good to turn things off properly and I am looking forward to a slightly smaller electricity bill next time round.

  9. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

Slightly more extreme than a meat free day.. my partner and I have agreed upon a ‘smoothie and or soup only day’ once a week and it feels great. We did this initially as one way of getting in to shape before our holidays. We had been making our own smoothies and soup for ages and it seeemd like a great idea. We both feel really good as surely its good to give our digestive systems a break? It really isn’t hard to do… I would recommend it..
