  1. Drive Yourself Carbon-Neutral -

I know offsetting is the last resort after trying to reduce emissions overall(I am trying hard to drive ‘greener’). And this is a way to neutralise emissions one car at a time.

  2. Go Fair Trade At The Office -

When I was working in a large office 3 years ago, I asked the catering manager about sourcing Fair Trade products for the coffee bar and canteen. Initially he was reluctant because of supplier contracts, but he was persuaded to give it a go over Fair Trade Fortnight. He got so much positive feedback from people in the office that after that he did then go on to stock Fair Trade teas and coffee alongside the ‘unfair’ products. So, a partial success. But it raised the profile of Fair Trade brands with all the office workers.

  3. Calculate your carbon footprint -

Oh the shame! mine came in at 12.12 tonnes – above national average. I like to think I make sustainable choices but its obviously not nearly enough. In my defence, my household was 3.17, appliances 0.91, and travel was 8.04. So it’s the long haul flights that are the main culprit here. And I do offset those.

    Must try harder.

Clairegillies – on the site you can compare your footprint with the national average on the final screen.

  4. Cheeky -

With a baby due any minute now, I’m doing a lot of last minute shopping online, and I will definitely get some cheeky wipes…

Apart from real nappies and resuable wipes – any other tips for a Green Baby?

Actually with regard to reusable nappies; does anyone know if you can mix and match or are do you have to commit to one system?

  5. DIY vegetables! -

I tried with limited success at this action this year.. my potatoes were sludgy and not very nice, my 100s of tomatos refused to go red and just stayed green, my beetroot had lovely leaves and looked pretty but had frankly pathetic tiny ‘roots’, out of a whole row I got two whole carrots which were delicious but only two. However my blueberries, strawberries and beans were glorious and delicious and plentiful. will try again next year … and plant my tomatos earlier.

I love living in North London where it’s relatively easy being green. Not dark green. More of a mossy mid-green type of green which reminds me of May and grasshoppers. I practice the organic art of neglect gardening in my Finsbury Park wildlife meadow. I’m thrilled to see hoards of bumble bees, ladybirds and birds as testament to my techniques. Seriously, I want to find a way to tread more lightly, for the world has enough for all our needs, but not all our greed. Generous is helping.
