  1. Start A Generous blog or journal -

This month I have committed to keeping a journal, as a way of helping me lead a “more balanced, proactive, productive and emotionally healthy life”. I quote from my excellent Adlerian counselling tutor. It will encompass any changes as a result of living generously, both practical and emotional/spiritual.

  2. Shop locally -

I have stopped shopping in the local supermarket (Tesco) except for the few things I can’t buy elsewhere, like soda stream refills. We are fortunate to have a delicatessen in St David’s which supplies a delicious range of foods including hoummus, brown basmati rice, fair trade tea & coffee, Pataks curry pastes, local free range organic eggs etc etc. It is expensive, which helps to stop me shopping carelessly.

I recently read a very helpful book by Rob Parsons entitled “The Money Secret”. Primarily aimed at people who are in debt, it is quick, easy to follow and a good read. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone. For the first time in my life someone has told me what th average family spends per year on clothes, food etc. Vey helpful, and very sobering for someone like me who has always struggled with budgeting.

If only all the actions were this straightforward!

  4. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

Years ago i bought 3 string bags from Friends of the Earth. I now keep them in my handbag and they carry a truly amazing amount of groceries! I thoroughly recommend them .

  5. Switch To Energy Saving Lightbulbs -

I am switching over to low energy bulbs as and when our current ones fail. We have candle bulbs in our living room-hopefully I can replace these too. Will try the website suggested above. We have no street lighting in our rural countryside location, so I was pleased to find that the bulbs were suitable for our outside light fittings. I am buying them from our local hardware store-expensive or what!

We are a family of four plus two dogs. Bob is a local GP and enjoys cycling, walking the dogs, playing folk music on his piano accordion, ballroom dancing classes (long before recent popularity) and watching foreign films. He speaks several foreign languages. I’m Liz-hi. I am Services Development Manager for the British Red Cross locally. Last year I set up a community Telephone Helpline from scratch for the BRC which I am proud of. I also acquired a Certificate in Adlerian counselling, and am considering the Diploma. I like living in this rugged and windswept part of Pembrokeshire. I enjoy being a homemaker and supportive parent to two teenage daughters, music, ballroom dancing, dog training, reading and gardening. We have two daughters – Bridget aged 16, and Miriam aged 13.
