  1. Recycle Your Old Mobile -

I really, really don’t want to do this – I’d much rather keep my old mobile and carry on using it! The problem is that after three tiny little years its (planned?) obsolescence is coming to fruition. I first made a laughing stock of myself by going into the phone shop and asking for a replacement battery, but now the display is deteriorating and the signal isn’t very good either. So, I will buy a new phone and recycle the old one. Sigh.

  2. Recycle Your Greetings Cards -

It’s cheating a bit to sign up for this as I’ve been doing it for years. I make most of the old cards into gift tags – I even use pinking shears to get that homemade crinkly edge – and the ones that aren’t suited to tag-life get recycled.

  3. Energy Efficient Cooking -

Can I ask for some practical advice?

I cook rice this way, putting the rice in the water, soaking it for a few mins, then bring to the boil and turn off.

However with pasta I generally bring the water to the boil and then put the pasta in. For this method does the pasta need to go in at the start as for rice?

I know I could just try it and see what happens (I will too) but I don’t want to waste buckets of pasta if I can help it!

  4. Why Pay More? -

The latest Crafts magazine has a review of and an excerpt from Kate Fletcher’s new book “Sustainable Fashion and Textiles”. I haven’t read the book yet but it is on my birthday wish list. She connects the increase in throw-away fashion with a decline in basic craft skills (like using a needle and thread) and looks at some interesting programmes which try and re-connect people with the clothes they wear. I see Kate Fletcher has a website at http://www.katefletcher.com/ so I am off to see what’s there…

I live in Scotland with husband, two cats, several looms and a large pile of compost. Our most generous household action is probably our commitment to eating local organic veg all year round: it means an awful lot of turnips. Our least generous? Well, there would be quite a lot of competition for that; but we are trying to improve.
