  1. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I pretty much always forget to take bags with me to the shops – although if with Elias I use the buggy. Have a bit of a campaign going with my local Pret store, who although are quite good on their general ethos are rubbish at not asking if you’d like a bag but instead thrust one at you plus about twenty knapkins. Note to self – write to the manager next.

  2. Compost Your Leftovers -

We used to have a small bin on the balcony and got the council to provide a special compost wheelie bin. Maybe see what your local authority can offer. If you’re a Southwark resident you can get a kit for just ten english pounds. See http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/environment/RecyclingPages/HomeComposting.html

  3. Give Your Unwanted / Unworn Clothes To Charity -

A firend of mine holds clothes swapparties – where you take along clothes you don’t like or wear very often or fit into anymore or are bored of and swap with others at the party. So it’s recycling as well as passing on. Anything left (the purple lycra leggings forexample) gets taken to a charity shop.

  4. Put Your Money Where Your Heart is (Bank Ethically) -

Have smile accounts and save with Shared Interest who are fab. Haven’t been to a bank for years – don’t know if this is a good or bad thing. Do use the post and post office ‘tho and internet- the ethics of which all become rather complicated.

  5. Recycle Your Old Mobile -

If any of you have lost your phones at Greenbelt they might be living another life now. If not claimed we often give them to people who haven’t made it into the mobile world yet or who are carrying around phones that would be better off in their cisterns! The ones that are bust we recycle wiuth Christian Aid.

  6. Shop locally -

Just got my hands on Keith Abel’s (of organic box delivery scheme fame) new cookbook ‘Cooking outside the box’ and it’s lovely and I’m salivating already. Lots of great recipes for your seasonal/local purchases. Delicious.

  7. DIY vegetables! -

We share our allotment with another family which works well. We’re too busy and away too much to manage it on our own and it’s also fun when we’re all down there together. Hoping to unearth our Jerusalem Artichokes this weekend…yum!

  8. Don't just recycle, Freecycle -

Great for random bits for the allotment and kids stuff that is normally so expensive and generally made from plastic so feels good to be reusing rather than making new consumptions. It feels generous too – people sharing their stuff and not wasting or dumping it.

  9. Become a Fair Trader - in your community or workplace -

We’ve recently done this at the office which we share with a few other charities who are thinking about doing the same. It takes a while to work out what of the stuff you usually use for meetings and daily drinks is available but once you have it’s easy. And you don’t have to go to shops as it all gets delivered to your door. Fantastic!
