  1. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I’ve just updated my progress on this to ‘Done!’ after my last shopping trip where I forgot my handy stash of ‘bags for life’. I rather rabidly said to the checkout man “NO! I don’t need a bag thanks!” and then struggled out the shop door clutching in my arms about 10 items determined not to take a plastic bag! I may be nuts but I reckon I’m ‘done’ on this one…

The Onya bags mentioned already do look great. I’m thinking of ordering some from their website. Christian Aid also do a very nice new sturdy shopper with the words “None of us is disposable” on the side which is quite a satisfying message to be promoting I reckon.

  2. Take A Mug To Work - don't use plastic -

A friend of mine suggested we start taking mugs to church for our post-service cuppa which we did for the very first time yesterday! It’s a big church and we’ve asked them to use biodegradable paper cups instead of polystyrene, but as yet to no avail. So we’re doing a visible ‘be the change you want to see’ thing with our own mugs!

  3. Give Something Away - and declutter your life -

To encourage you in your de-cluttering, and with some good advice and healthy tongue-in-cheek attitude, have a read of this website and ezine, Breathe – the slogan is “less stuff, more life”, http://www.ibreathe.org.uk

I’m a happy 30-something Christian living in Brighton and trying to do my bit to live well, and encourage my fellow church members to do the same too… It’s a battle – even persuading the church to use Fairtrade tea and coffee hasn’t happened yet. We’ve done a few events recently under a ‘Simply Living’ banner which have gone well, including a very fun clothes swap event (ladies only!). It was like a jumble sale, but with wine, cake, less elbowing and of course no charge to take any of the clothes home.
